On Friday, Partap Singh Bajwa and Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, prominent leaders within the Punjab Congress, expressed their grievances regarding their denied access to visit their fellow party member, MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira, who had been arrested in Fazilka. They asserted that they were obstructed from meeting Khaira, who had been taken into custody by the Punjab Police in relation to a drug trafficking case dating back to 2015.
Following his arrest, Khaira, the MLA representing Bholath, was presented before a court in Jalalabad, Fazilka, where he was remanded in police custody for a duration of two days.
On that fateful Friday, Partap Singh Bajwa, who holds the distinguished position of Leader of the Opposition within the state, accompanied by Amrinder Singh Raja Warring and other senior leaders, ventured to visit Khaira, who was currently under the jurisdiction of the Punjab Police in Fazilka.
Bajwa voiced their intentions, stating, "We wanted to pay a visit to our colleague and reassure him of our party's unwavering support. However, the police declined us access to meet him." He emphasized the significance of the situation, highlighting, "I hold the position of Leader of the Opposition, and my elected MLA has been apprehended. Our aim was to meet him in the presence of law enforcement—it was a courtesy visit, yet our request was denied."
Furthermore, Bajwa directed criticism towards the Bhagwant Mann administration, alleging that it was engaged in vindictive politics.
It is noteworthy that on the previous day, a delegation from the Punjab Congress met with Governor Banwarilal Purohit to voice their concerns about what they perceived as a spurious case.
Khaira's arrest unfolded amidst ongoing discussions about seat-sharing arrangements within the opposition's INDIA bloc.
The Punjab Congress has already taken a firm stance against any potential alliance with the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the state for the upcoming general elections.
