The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has initiated action by issuing a notice to the Rajasthan government and the state's police chief in response to an incident in the Pratapgarh district. This incident involved a pregnant woman who was reportedly subjected to a distressing ordeal, including being allegedly stripped naked and paraded in a village by her husband, as reported by officials.
In a statement released on Monday, the NHRC expressed its concern and stated its intention to inquire about the woman's current health status and any compensation that may have been provided to her by the administration.
The victim, a 21-year-old tribal woman, was purportedly subjected to this harrowing ordeal within the boundaries of Pratapgarh district by her spouse. This distressing incident came to light after a video of the incident circulated on social media platforms.
The NHRC, in taking "suo motu cognizance of a media report," emphasized that the incident occurred on August 31 and involved the alleged beating and public humiliation of a pregnant woman by her family members in the Pratapgarh district of Rajasthan.
Furthermore, the NHRC acknowledged the viral nature of the incident on social media platforms and expressed its serious concern about the potential violation of the victim's human rights if the reports are accurate.
Consequently, the NHRC has initiated a formal process by issuing notices to the chief secretary and the Director General of Police in Rajasthan, requesting a comprehensive report within four weeks. The report should encompass details regarding the actions taken against the individuals responsible for the incident and the current status of the investigation initiated following the registration of an FIR (First Information Report) in this matter.
According to the media report published on September 2, the victim had accompanied a man to a neighboring village, from where her family members brought her back and subjected her to inhumane treatment. Despite the victim's appeals for assistance, it was reported that bystanders chose to record videos of the incident rather than offering help, adding to the distressing nature of the incident.
