External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, addressing the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) amid the ongoing diplomatic standoff between India and Canada, emphasized that responses to "terrorism, extremism, and violence" should not be determined by political convenience. He also stressed the importance of respecting territorial integrity and non-interference in internal affairs without selective application.
Jaishankar underlined the necessity of a "rule-based" global order and asserted that the era where a few nations shaped the global agenda is over. He highlighted India's evolution from the era of non-alignment to what he referred to as the "Vishwa Mitra" era, emphasizing India's commitment to promoting cooperation with a diverse range of partners.
Regarding legislative progress, Jaishankar lauded India's Women's Reservation Bill as a "path-breaking legislation." He described India as a society deeply rooted in democratic traditions and noted that its thinking, approaches, and actions are grounded and authentic.
The minister also celebrated India's achievements in space exploration, mentioning the Chandrayaan-3 mission to the Moon. He highlighted India's G20 presidency and the significance of the outcomes from the recent G20 Summit held in New Delhi.
Jaishankar initiated his address with a warm "Namaste from Bharat" and described the occasion as an opportunity to reflect on achievements, challenges, aspirations, and goals.
The 78th United Nations General Assembly's high-level session took place in New York, with External Affairs Minister Jaishankar leading the Indian delegation.
