Terrorists tolerated in Canada because of political pressure: Jaishankar S

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar made remarks on Friday suggesting that Canada has adopted a lenient stance towards terrorists and extremists who openly advocate violence, providing them with a significant degree of operational freedom within the country. Speaking at an event held in Washington DC, Jaishankar expressed concerns about what he termed a "permissive Canadian attitude" towards individuals who openly promote violence and extremism. He contended that these individuals have found a foothold in Canada due to the complexities of Canadian politics.

Jaishankar elaborated on the situation, stating that for India, Canada represents a nation where various issues converge, including organized crime originating from India, human trafficking, secessionist movements, violence, and terrorism. He characterized this convergence as a troubling amalgamation of problems and individuals who have found a supportive environment in Canada.

The foreign minister underscored that the existing tension in India's relationship with Canada predates the allegations made by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Trudeau had suggested a "potential link" between agents of the Indian government and the murder of a Khalistani terrorist, Hardeep Singh Nijjar, in June, a statement that strained diplomatic ties between the two nations.

Jaishankar further highlighted the challenges faced by Indian diplomats in Canada, emphasizing that they encounter security risks when visiting the embassy or consulate. He noted instances of public intimidation targeting Indian diplomats, which prompted the temporary suspension of visa operations in Canada.

Regarding Trudeau's allegations, Jaishankar mentioned that they were initially raised in private discussions before becoming public statements. In response to these allegations, Jaishankar clarified that India conveyed that Trudeau's assertions were inconsistent with India's policies. Additionally, India expressed a willingness to investigate any specific and pertinent information that the Canadian government might provide.
