On a Saturday, the Kolkata Police made a significant apprehension by arresting two individuals engaged in operating a clandestine betting operation via their mobile devices, all while on the move, during the Asia Cup clash between India and Pakistan. The apprehended suspects have been identified as Satyendra Yadav (29) and Sumit Singh (33).
In response to their illicit activities, legal action was initiated, with charges filed against them under Section 120B (pertaining to criminal conspiracy) and 420 (relating to cheating) of the Indian Penal Code, in addition to the relevant sections outlined within the West Bengal Gambling and Prize Competitions Act of 1957.
The intelligence that prompted this operation was rooted in the discovery of a cricket betting operation operating within Kolkata, strategically leveraging the mobility of a moving vehicle as a means to evade law enforcement scrutiny, thus forsaking the conventional approach of conducting such endeavors within a stationary office setting.
A dedicated team from the Kolkata Police meticulously pursued the suspicious-looking vehicle in question, ultimately intercepting it in the vicinity of Waterloo Street. Subsequent to a thorough search of the vehicle, law enforcement successfully retrieved three mobile phones along with other incriminating evidence, leading to the arrest of the two individuals involved.
Furthermore, the vehicle implicated in the illegal betting operation was impounded by the police.
Notably, the Asia Cup fixture between India and Pakistan on that particular Saturday faced an unfortunate fate as it succumbed to abandonment due to inclement weather conditions marked by heavy rainfall. Consequently, both teams were awarded points, with Pakistan advancing to the Super 4 stage, owing to their previous triumph over Nepal in the inaugural match of the 2023 Asia Cup, held on August 30.
