Following the Joint Student Body (JSB) in Churachandpur, Manipur's call for a public holiday on Friday, the police have taken action by filing a First Information Report (FIR) against the organization. The FIR has been registered based on various sections of the law, including section 186 (pertaining to the voluntary obstruction of public servants in their duties), section 341 (related to wrongful confinement of individuals), section 189 (related to threats of injury to public servants), and section 506 (related to criminal intimidation).
This development comes shortly after the Chief Secretary of Manipur, Vineet Joshi, issued a notice on October 27, declaring any attempt to declare a public holiday on Friday as "completely illegal." The notice strongly condemned the deliberate efforts to rename institutions and places, along with publicly announcing a resolution to observe Fridays as holidays in Churachandpur, including government offices, District Collectors' offices, Superintendents of Police offices, Zonal Education Offices, Assistant Deputy Commissioners' offices, government schools, and colleges.
The notice pointed out an October 26 circular issued by the JSB, which advocated for a public holiday on Fridays. It emphasized that the content of the circular had the potential to exacerbate the ongoing law and order issues in the state. Consequently, the letter instructed all District Magistrates and Superintendents of Police in every district to take the necessary actions to enforce these directives. Additionally, all institutions, establishments, and autonomous bodies were advised to ensure strict attendance among their staff and students.
