In the early hours of a Friday morning, an unsettling incident unfolded in the West Imphal district of Manipur, as a leader associated with the Meitei outfit found himself targeted by unidentified assailants. The clock approached 7:30 am when Pramod Singh, the chief of Meitei Leepun, and his chauffeur stood near a local hospital, their peaceful morning disrupted by the sudden and menacing arrival of armed individuals in a vehicle.
Fortunately, both Singh and his driver managed to emerge from this perilous encounter unscathed, a testament to their presence of mind or perhaps a stroke of fortunate timing. Despite this fortunate outcome, their vehicle bore the visible scars of the attack, punctuated by six bullet holes, serving as a grim reminder of the danger they had narrowly avoided.
In the aftermath of this disturbing event, law enforcement swiftly swung into action, registering a formal case to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack. A team of forensic experts meticulously collected samples and other crucial pieces of evidence from the scene, with the hope of shedding light on the identity and motives of the perpetrators. At present, the reasons behind this assault remain shrouded in mystery, leaving the community and authorities perplexed.
It is worth noting that Pramot Singh had previously come under legal scrutiny, as a non-bailable warrant was issued against him by the Judicial Magistrate of Churchanpur district on October 9. This warrant stemmed from allegations that he had made divisive and communal statements during an interview with The Wire, though curiously, he had never been apprehended by the authorities, adding another layer of intrigue to the situation.
The state of Manipur has been trapped in a disconcerting cycle of violence since ethnic clashes initially erupted in May, casting a long shadow of turmoil and instability over the region. Tragically, the toll of this protracted conflict has been significant, with more than 180 lives lost in its wake.
These clashes have been fueled by a multitude of grievances held by both opposing sides, intensifying the deep-rooted tensions. Yet, a critical turning point in this crisis has revolved around the contentious proposal to grant Meiteis Scheduled Tribe status, a decision that has been subject to fluctuation and reversals.
Meiteis, constituting approximately 53 percent of Manipur's population, predominantly inhabit the Imphal Valley, while tribal communities, including Nagas and Kukis, make up around 40 percent of the populace and are primarily concentrated in the hill districts. This demographic diversity has played a pivotal role in the ongoing discord, further complicating efforts to find a lasting and equitable resolution to the region's persistent turmoil.
