On Friday night, Nepal experienced a seismic event of substantial magnitude, measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale. The tremors were so potent that they reverberated across a vast expanse of northern India, encompassing not only the Delhi-NCR region but also extending their reach into the states of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh. According to data provided by the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), this earthquake unfolded at precisely 11:32 p.m., originating from a depth of 10 kilometers beneath the Earth's surface.
Officials at the National Earthquake Measurement Centre pinpointed the epicenter of this seismic occurrence as the Lamidanda area within Nepal's Jajarkot district. This marked the latest addition to a series of earthquakes that have consistently brought their tremors to the Delhi-NCR region, keeping the populace on edge.
Just a few days prior, on October 22, Nepal was rocked by a 6.1 magnitude earthquake, with its epicenter located in Dhading. The seismic waves from this event also extended their influence into the Delhi-NCR region, creating a sense of vulnerability among the inhabitants.
On October 15, the tremors of a 3.1 magnitude earthquake, originating in Haryana, reached the Delhi-NCR region, further emphasizing the persistent seismic activity in the area.
Before that, a string of earthquakes originating from Nepal rattled various parts of northern India, including Delhi and its environs, on October 3. The most powerful of these measured 6.2 on the Richter scale. Ajay Paul, a seismologist with prior experience at the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, observed that the epicenter of the earthquake on Friday was situated in close proximity to the site of the October 3 quakes. He identified this region as the central belt of Nepal, characterized by its "active energy-releasing sectors."
In light of these ongoing seismic events, Paul emphasized the need for heightened vigilance and preparedness for potential future earthquakes. In Nepal, reports emerged of individuals sustaining injuries from the earthquake, with visuals depicting ambulances rushing to provide medical assistance. Disturbing images also revealed structural damage, as walls of houses cracked under the impact of the earthquake's force, underscoring the need for continued vigilance and resilience in the face of such natural calamities.
