"Not the best way," says a Union Minister who is "disappointed" in the Vistara cabin's cleanliness


Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar expressed his profound disappointment and dissatisfaction concerning the condition and service quality experienced during his recent flight with Vistara Airlines, which transpired during his journey from London to Delhi. His grievances stemmed from the disheartening observation of a water bottle and partially consumed food items left scattered on the cabin floor. This incident occurred while he was returning from a summit in the United Kingdom, prompting him to articulate his concerns and share visual evidence of the flight's suboptimal state.

In his candid reflection on the matter, the minister offered a mixed review of the flight experience. He lauded the flight itself, characterized by a relatively new and pristine 787 aircraft that ensured a remarkably smooth journey. However, his elation waned significantly as he turned his attention to the cabin's condition and the quality of service extended to passengers. The presence of food remnants and litter within the cabin did not align with his expectations, leading him to assert that such conditions were not in harmony with the spirit of welcoming visitors to India, nor were they commensurate with the level of competition expected from global carriers.

With a sense of dismay and concern, Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar conveyed his disappointment through a post on the social media platform X. He pointed out the critical areas in which he perceived shortcomings, particularly in terms of the in-flight dining experience and cabin cleanliness, concluding his post with the hashtag #Disappointed.

Vistara Airlines, a prominent airline company, emerged as the subject of his critique. Notably, Vistara operates as a joint venture between Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines, with Tata Sons holding a majority stake. The airline's response to the minister's post was swift, and it expressed regret for the specific instance he had encountered, categorizing it as an isolated incident.

In their response within the social media thread, Vistara acknowledged their deviation from their customary and established cleaning procedures during the flight in question. They acknowledged the validity of the minister's concerns and appreciated his understanding, reiterating that the subpar conditions he encountered were not representative of their typical standards.

Minister Chandrasekhar's candid assessment ignited a robust and constructive online dialogue, with several other individuals echoing his sentiments and sharing their own apprehensions regarding similar experiences with air travel.

In response to a comment posted in reaction to his initial statement, the minister underscored the essential need for a genuine cultural and attitudinal transformation within the airline industry, emphasizing the significance of reaching global standards. He noted that for many Indians, there is a shared aspiration for airlines like Air India and Vistara to emerge as internationally renowned brands, buoyed by the esteemed legacy of two distinguished entities, namely, Taj Hotels and Singapore Airlines, which are closely associated with these airlines.

He maintained that achieving such a transformation demands dedicated training and cultural shifts to meet the expectations set by global competitors in the full-service airline sector. He expressed hope that Tata Companies, the majority stakeholder in Vistara, would spearhead the necessary initiatives and interventions to ensure that these airlines could compete on a global stage and achieve the standards of excellence associated with renowned brands like Taj.
