Protests on campus after an IIT-BHU student was "stripped, molested" by men on bikes

An incident at IIT-BHU in Varanasi has sparked outrage as a female student alleged that she was molested by motorcycle-riding individuals on the campus during the early hours of Thursday. This incident led to a protest by hundreds of students.

The purported incident occurred when the student left her hostel with a friend in the early hours of Thursday. She stated in her complaint that she was confronted by three men on motorcycles who proceeded to molest her.

According to the student's complaint, the accused men separated her from her friend and took her to a secluded area where they allegedly disrobed her, recorded a video, and took photos.

After roughly 15 minutes, they released her but obtained her phone number, as mentioned in the complaint.

Based on the student's complaint, a First Information Report (FIR) has been registered under Section 354 of the Indian Penal Code (dealing with assault or criminal force against a woman with the intent to outrage her modesty) and under the relevant provisions of the IT Act, according to the police.

In response to the incident, students gathered at the Student Activity Center on the IIT-BHU campus to protest. They suggested that external individuals may have been involved in the incident and called for restrictions on outsiders entering the campus.

DCP RS Gautam stated, "While the accused are being traced, some students are demanding that the boundaries of their IIT campus be separated. Apart from this, students have also given a memorandum regarding the smooth functioning of CCTV cameras and electricity."

He further noted that a team has been formed to locate the accused individuals, with their search being aided by CCTV footage.

The DCP also warned that if any videos or photos related to the student who was allegedly molested are posted on social media, appropriate actions will be taken.
