Susheela Jayapal, the sister of Indian-American Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal, has officially launched her congressional campaign in the U.S. state of Oregon.
With a background as a former county commissioner in Oregon, Susheela's candidacy was announced on a Wednesday, and she aspires to succeed the long-serving Democratic Party Representative Earl Blumenauer, according to the Oregonlive news portal.
In a post on X, formerly Twitter, Susheela Jayapal articulated her vision for the campaign, stating, "We need a progressive champion in Washington to carry on Congressman Blumenauer's legacy, stand up to MAGA ideologues, and get things done for our community without compromising our values."
The 61-year-old Democrat expressed her pride in announcing her candidacy for Congress. To make this bid possible, she took the significant step of resigning from her position on the state's Multnomah County Board of Commissioners.
As she explained, her decision to run for Congress is rooted in her commitment to addressing critical local issues, such as the homelessness crisis, public safety, and fair wages for frontline workers. However, her aspirations extend beyond local matters, encompassing the broader issues that she aims to tackle in Congress. These include combating what she characterizes as an "extremist ideologue takeover of the Republican Party" and standing up for democracy and individual rights.
Susheela Jayapal has earned the endorsement of her sister Pramila, the Congresswoman from Washington's 7th Congressional District. Pramila expressed her support in a social media post, encouraging grassroots donations to fuel Susheela's campaign.
With a background that includes nearly two decades of service on the boards of various nonprofit organizations, Susheela was elected to represent North and Northeast Portland on the Multnomah County Commission in 2018. Despite her relatively short time in the political arena, Susheela believes that her track record as a county commissioner and her established trust within the community make her well-prepared to represent Portland in Congress.
According to her campaign's platform, Susheela Jayapal intends to serve as a strong, progressive advocate for the well-being and safety of her community. Her goals include championing abortion rights, taking on major polluters, addressing climate change, and confronting election deniers in defense of democracy.
Susheela's personal journey has taken her through India, Singapore, and Indonesia during her upbringing. She pursued her education at Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania, majoring in Economics. Following that, she earned her law degree from the University of Chicago and built her career as an attorney in private practice. Later, she assumed the role of general counsel for Adidas America, where she held the distinction of being the sole woman and person of color in senior leadership at the time. These experiences have undoubtedly shaped her perspective and drive for public service, as highlighted in her campaign.
