The February 11 general elections in Pakistan were rescheduled until February 8

The general elections in Pakistan have been scheduled for February 8, 2024, according to a recent announcement. The decision comes after a meeting between President Arif Alvi and top election officials, which was prompted by the Supreme Court's directives. This new date replaces the earlier one mentioned in a statement by the election commission's lawyer, which had indicated February 11 as the election date.

The meeting between the Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja, Attorney General Mansoor Usman Awan, and other electoral body members with President Alvi led to the unanimous agreement on the February 8 election date. This decision follows discussions regarding the progress of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) with respect to delimitation and other election-related preparations.

Previously, the ECP had stated that elections would occur in January 2024 but had not specified a date. In a hearing before the Supreme Court, the ECP's lawyer stated that the final list of constituencies would be published on December 5, with all other arrangements completed by January 29, leading to the decision to hold elections on February 11, which falls on the second Sunday.

This resolution regarding the election date is significant, especially considering the ongoing talks between Pakistan and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for a $710 million second tranche of a $3 billion loan. While the IMF had not explicitly linked the election date to the negotiations, the clarity on this matter could strengthen the position of Pakistan's Ministry of Finance.

The issue of the election date had been a subject of debate for weeks following the dissolution of the National Assembly, as elections should be held within 90 days after dissolution. The delay in specifying the date was primarily due to the need to finalize electoral districts after a recent census.

The decision has elicited mixed reactions from political parties, with the JUI-F expressing concerns about the timing due to weather conditions, while the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) supported the ECP's decision. The PPP and PTI called for the immediate announcement of the election date and a commitment to a level playing field. This development brings an end to the uncertainty surrounding the election date, enabling political parties to prepare for the upcoming elections.
