During a Meerut Municipal Corporation meeting on Saturday, chaos erupted among the Samajwadi Party, BJP, and Bahujan Samaj Party councillors. The reported cause of the clashes was a statement made by BJP councillor Rekha Singh regarding house tax during the session.
The assertion by Singh faced opposition from councillors of the other two parties, sparking an uproar and leading to intense clashes among the stakeholders. The altercation allegedly extended beyond the meeting hall, spilling onto the streets as councillors engaged in physical altercations.
Amid the chaos, BJP MLC Dharmendra Bhardwaj, attempting to calm the situation, also found himself embroiled in the scuffle and was reportedly assaulted. Videos captured during the brawl depicted Bhardwaj involved in physical altercations with a councillor.
Police intervention became necessary to separate the warring councillors entangled in the House brawl. Responding to the incident, BJP MLA Somendra Tomar arrived at the scene and pledged action against those captured on camera involved in the violent clashes. Meerut Mayor Harikant Ahluwalia affirmed an ongoing investigation into the matter.
Accusations have flown in multiple directions, with BJP leaders alleging assault and shoving, while opposition councillors claim they were attacked by BJP MLCs and workers.
This incident follows a previous day's tumultuous altercation during a Shamli Municipal Council board meeting, where two council members engaged in a heated argument that escalated into a physical confrontation.
Sharing a video of the incident, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav took a swipe at the BJP, adding to the political scrutiny surrounding the clashes.
