Arunachal Pradesh suspect shoots dead an ex-Congress MLA

A former Arunachal Pradesh MLA, Yumsen Matey, was fatally shot by an alleged militant in a village situated in Tirap district on Saturday, where he had gone for personal matters, as reported by officials.

The tragic incident unfolded around 3 pm near Raho village, near the Myanmar border. Yumsen Matey, a former Congress legislator, had accompanied three followers to the village for personal business. However, he was led into a jungle under a pretext, and someone opened fire, resulting in his immediate demise, according to Tirap SP Rahul Gupta.

The police promptly initiated a search operation to apprehend the perpetrator. Although the SP refrained from disclosing the militant's identity, defense sources suggested the potential involvement of the NSCN-KYA in the lethal attack.

Yumsen Matey, who had previously served as an MLA from the Khonsa West assembly constituency on a Congress ticket in 2009, later joined the BJP in 2015. Earlier this year, he expressed his intention to contest the upcoming assembly polls in 2024.

Before his political career, Matey held the position of district adult education officer in Changlang district. Official data reveals that out of the 239 insurgency-related fatalities in Arunachal Pradesh since March 2000, 183 have occurred in the Tirap-Changlang-Longding (TCL) region.
