Court lessens punishment for eight Indian Navy veterans who are on death row in Qatar

A recent development reveals that the Qatar court has modified the death sentences imposed on eight former Indian Navy personnel, who were accused of espionage in the Dahra Global case. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued a statement confirming this reduction in sentences by the Court of Appeal of Qatar. However, the statement did not provide specifics of the court's decision, emphasizing that a comprehensive judgment is awaited.

This adjustment in the sentences follows the acceptance of an appeal by the Indian government against the initial death sentences by Qatar's Court of First Instance. The MEA underscored its ongoing engagement with legal representatives and family members, indicating that further steps will be determined collaboratively.

The MEA's official statement affirmed, "Our Ambassador to Qatar and other officials were present at the Court of Appeal today, along with family members. We have stood by them since the beginning of the matter, and we will continue to extend all consular and legal assistance. We will also continue to take up the matter with the Qatari authorities."

The espionage case involved Indian nationals employed by the private company Al Dahra, leading to their arrest in August of the previous year. The Court of First Instance in Qatar initially handed down death sentences on October 26. India responded to this ruling with deep concern, pledging to explore various legal avenues.

The charges against these individuals were undisclosed by both Qatari authorities and New Delhi. The MEA, in the wake of the Qatari court's decision, reiterated its commitment to the case's significance and the pursuit of all available legal options.

Navy Chief Admiral R Hari Kumar, in a recent statement, affirmed the government's dedicated efforts to repatriate the incarcerated ex-Navy personnel from Qatar, emphasizing the comprehensive support provided to safeguard their interests.
