In the Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir, a tragic incident unfolded as four military personnel lost their lives, while three others sustained injuries when terrorists launched a deadly attack on two Army vehicles. The targeted vehicles were engaged in the transportation of soldiers from an area near Bufliaz, where an ongoing anti-terrorism operation had been actively underway since Wednesday night. The focus of this operation was primarily on the general vicinity of DKG (Dera ki Gali), encompassing Thanamandi and Rajouri.
The ambush took place in the Savni area along the Rajouri-Thanamandi-Surankote road, transpiring around 3:45 pm. The assailants believed to be terrorists, initiated gunfire on the convoy, which consisted of a truck and a Gypsy. In response to this grave situation, additional forces were swiftly dispatched to the location.
According to a statement from a defense Public Relations Officer (PRO), a joint operation was set in motion the previous night based on solid intelligence. Today, contact was established, leading to an ongoing encounter. Further details regarding the incident are currently under investigation, as stated by the defense PRO in communication with the news agency PTI.
It is noteworthy that this ambush occurred several weeks after an earlier encounter in the Bajimaal forest area within the adjoining Rajouri district. In that previous incident, which transpired last month, five Army personnel, including two captains, tragically lost their lives.
In a related development, an explosion rattled the compound of an armed police unit in Poonch district, Jammu and Kashmir, on Wednesday. The incident, which unfolded during the night spanning December 19 and 20 in the Surankote area, resulted in damage to the windows of some vehicles parked near the compound. Authorities are actively investigating this separate occurrence in conjunction with the broader security situation in the region.
