McDonald's Malaysia files lawsuit against Israel boycott movement over posts about company

McDonald’s Malaysia has initiated legal action against a movement advocating for boycotts against Israel, alleging that the movement's statements are untrue and damaging to its reputation, resulting in financial repercussions. The lawsuit seeks damages totalling 6 million ringgit ($1.31 million).

Being predominantly Muslim, Malaysia stands firmly in support of the Palestinian cause. In line with sentiments in several Muslim nations, certain Western fast-food chains in Malaysia have become targets of boycott initiatives due to Israel’s military actions in Gaza.

Gerbang Alaf Restaurants Sdn Bhd (GAR), the licensee for McDonald’s in Malaysia, has taken legal recourse against the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) Malaysia movement. The lawsuit centres on social media posts that allegedly associate the fast-food giant, along with other companies, with Israel’s purported "genocidal war against Palestinians in Gaza."

As per a summons dated December 19 obtained by Reuters, Gerbang Alaf Restaurants accuses BDS Malaysia of encouraging the public to boycott McDonald’s Malaysia. This alleged action resulted in financial losses, job reductions, and operational disruptions such as closures and reduced operating hours for McDonald’s outlets.

McDonald’s Malaysia, affirming its lawsuit against BDS Malaysia, stated that its legal action aims to safeguard its "rights and interests."

In response, BDS Malaysia refutes the accusations of defamation against the fast-food chain and has opted to let the legal process handle the matter.

The BDS movement's objective is to curtail global backing for Israel's policies perceived as oppressive toward Palestinians. Their goal is to exert pressure on Israel to adhere to international legal standards.
