Mumbai customs destroyed drugs worth Rs 410 crore


The Drugs Disposal Committee, a constituent body of Mumbai Customs Zone-I, CBIC, comprising senior officials from DRI and Mumbai Customs, executed the destruction of a substantial quantity of Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS), amounting to 54.850 kg. This included heroin, cocaine, and marijuana, with an estimated market value of Rs 410 crore. The disposal took place through the method of incineration, conducted at the Common Hazardous Waste Treatment Storage and Disposal Facility (CHWTSDF) of Mumbai Waste Management Limited in Taloja, Navi Mumbai, on the designated day of Wednesday.

Throughout this year, the Customs authorities have undertaken the destruction of a cumulative total of 244.9 kg of drugs, having an overall market value of Rs 1,515 crore. This marks the third such instance of drug disposal in the current year. The initial disposal event occurred on March 2, 2023, where 61.585 kg of drugs valued at Rs 240 crore were incinerated. Subsequently, on July 19, the Customs authorities executed the destruction of 128.47 kg of drugs, with an estimated worth of Rs 865 crore.

The assortment of drugs subjected to destruction had been seized by various law enforcement agencies, including the Postal Appraisal Section (PAS), Special Investigation and Intelligence Branch (SIIB), and the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI). This collaborative effort underscores the commitment of multiple agencies in addressing the menace of illicit drugs and safeguarding public well-being.
