Sonia Gandhi: "Democracy has been strangled" in reference to the suspension of 141 MPs

Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) chief Sonia Gandhi expressed strong criticism of the Narendra Modi government for the suspension of 141 Opposition MPs during the ongoing Winter Session of Parliament. Addressing a party meeting in New Delhi, she accused the government of "strangling" democracy, emphasizing that such a mass suspension of Opposition MPs is unprecedented. Sonia Gandhi condemned the government's decision, stating that it was based on the Opposition's reasonable and legitimate demand.

Supporting the Opposition MPs' call for a statement from Union Home Minister Amit Shah regarding the Parliamentary security breach on December 13, Sonia Gandhi said, "All that the opposition MPs asked for was a statement to be made by the (Union) Home Minister in the Lok Sabha addressing the extraordinary events of December 13."

She criticized the government's response as "arrogant" and highlighted the Prime Minister's delayed address to the nation on the incident, which took place outside of Parliament. Sonia Gandhi argued that this action demonstrated a disregard for the dignity of the Lok Sabha and the people of the country.

In her speech, Sonia Gandhi invited the audience to imagine the response of the BJP if they were in the Opposition under similar circumstances. The chaos in the Lok Sabha on December 13 involved two individuals jumping into the House chamber, releasing yellow smoke, and shouting slogans. Following the incident, six individuals were arrested under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) for their alleged involvement.
