Persisting rainfall in the southern districts of Tamil Nadu over the last two days has given rise to a flood-like situation, compelling the state administration to seek support from the Indian Coast Guard to address the crisis. The focus is on rescuing stranded individuals and delivering relief materials to the affected regions. It is worth noting that mobile communication networks in Tuticorin are currently non-operational due to the adverse weather conditions.
Responding to the urgent need for assistance, a total of six Disaster Relief Teams (DRTs) from the Indian Coast Guard have been deployed to actively engage in rescue operations and contribute to relief efforts. This collaborative initiative involves close coordination with the respective district administrations.
To enhance monitoring capabilities, an Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) equipped with an integral helicopter has been dispatched by the Indian Coast Guard. This vessel is tasked with assessing the situation in the coastal areas of Tuticorin, contributing valuable insights to aid the ongoing relief operations. The Coast Guard headquarters in Tuticorin is working in tandem with district administrations in Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi to ensure a well-coordinated approach to relief efforts.
As part of the comprehensive response strategy, a specialized team of rescue divers, equipped with paddle boats and kayaks, has been mobilized to Tuticorin. Additionally, an extra DRT from the Coast Guard Station in Mandapam has been deployed to reinforce the ongoing rescue operations in the affected areas. The concerted efforts of the Indian Coast Guard and district administrations underscore the commitment to addressing the challenges posed by inclement weather and providing timely assistance to the affected communities.
