On Tuesday, Kerala Health Minister Veena George addressed concerns regarding the rise in COVID-19 cases in the state and emphasized that certain individuals are spreading "unnecessary fear" by circulating rumors about an increased prevalence of the virus. Minister George clarified that the individuals who recently passed away had pre-existing serious illnesses, and none of them succumbed specifically to Covid-19.
During a ministerial meeting, preparations were discussed in response to a slight uptick in Covid-19 cases in November. The health department issued a cautionary alert and initiated preparatory measures. To further investigate the situation, it was decided to send samples for whole-genome sequencing, a process that has been ongoing since November.
According to Minister George, whole genomic testing revealed the presence of the Omicron sub-variant JN.1 in just one sample, belonging to a 79-year-old individual from Thiruvananthapuram's Karakulam. Notably, this person successfully recovered from COVID-19 through home treatment. Minister George highlighted that the detection of this variant in Kerala was a result of the state's robust healthcare systems and vigilant testing procedures.
Addressing the broader context, Minister George mentioned that JN.1 has also been identified in 15 individuals who traveled from India to Singapore in recent months. This suggests the presence of the variant in other Indian states. The Health Department's proactive measures, including monitoring the use of ICU beds and ventilators, ensuring the availability of isolation facilities, and oxygen beds, and conducting online mock drills in hospitals, demonstrate the state's commitment to managing the situation effectively.
Emphasizing the importance of not misinterpreting the situation and causing unnecessary panic, Minister George encouraged elderly and seriously ill individuals to take precautions against COVID-19. The Health Department continues to review and enhance the readiness of healthcare facilities, with arrangements made for additional beds, including those with oxygen and ICU facilities, in response to potential future developments.
