On the same day that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is scheduled to confer with Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the unresolved financial dues to the state, the Income Tax Department orchestrated extensive searches on Wednesday at the residence of Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Bayron Biswas in Sagardighi. The sweep also encompassed various properties linked to him, including hospitals and a school.
Initiated in the early hours of the morning, the raids, executed by a substantial team comprising tax officials and law enforcement personnel, covered multiple assets owned by Biswas throughout West Bengal. Simultaneous operations unfolded at the MLA's current residence, warehouse, nursing home, and assorted establishments. Additionally, raids extended to Byron's school located in Raghunathganj.
The rationale behind these operations stemmed from information suggesting that the Trinamool leader may be involved in undisclosed businesses, including beedi manufacturing units and a nursing home. The raids were evidently intended to garner insights into the business transactions associated with these ventures.
During these operations, Byron and individuals closely associated with him, responsible for overseeing his business affairs, were reportedly subjected to questioning and searches at their respective residences by the Income Tax Department.
It is noteworthy that the raids on Bayron Biswas's properties unfolded concurrently with another set of Income Tax searches at the residence of TMC MLA Jafikul Islam in Domkal.
This synchronized action by central agencies coincides with Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's scheduled meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to address the issue of pending dues owed to the state.
Bayron Biswas, originally the sole Congress MLA in West Bengal, switched allegiance immediately after the 2023 Assembly Bypoll in the Sagardighi constituency. Bolstered by the Left, Biswas secured victory over Trinamool's Debashish Banerjee by a substantial margin of nearly 23,000 votes in Sagardighi.
