The Maine Secretary of State was singled out in a swatting call after the Trump election outcome

Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows experienced a swatting incident, characterized by a fake emergency call leading police to her residence, following her decision to remove Donald Trump from the state's primary ballot. The prank call prompted a police response to Bellows' home, although she was away at the time, and no suspicious activity was discovered.

While the Maine Department of Public Safety did not disclose the motive behind the swatting attempt, Bellows attributed it to her recent decision regarding Trump, especially after her home address was shared on social media by a conservative activist with violent intent.

The swatting episode unfolded when an unknown individual falsely reported a break-in at a house in Manchester, using Bellows' home address. Maine State Police responded to the call, conducting a thorough check both inside and outside the residence. Subsequently, they found nothing amiss, but investigations into the incident continued.

Despite the intimidation and threats directed at her, Bellows asserted her commitment to upholding the Constitution and the rule of law. Other politicians, including U.S. Sen. Rick Scott, Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, and Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost, have also been targets of swatting incidents.

Bellows highlighted the escalation of threatening communications, dehumanizing images, and fake text threads aimed at her and her office since her decision regarding Trump. She expressed concern over the dangerous rhetoric leading to violence and emphasized the importance of de-escalating tensions and upholding democratic values.

In response to Bellows' decision, the Trump campaign plans to appeal to Maine's state courts, while Bellows has suspended her ruling pending the court's decision. Recently, the Colorado Supreme Court removed Trump from its ballot, awaiting a U.S. Supreme Court decision on the insurrection clause, which prohibits those who "engaged in insurrection" from holding office.
