Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla expressed his concern over the connection some Members of Parliament were making between the decision to suspend certain members and the security breach incident in Parliament. In a communication addressed to all MPs on Saturday regarding the security lapse that occurred on December 13, Om Birla emphasized the unfortunate linking of the House's decision to suspend members to the aforementioned security breach.
In elucidating the rationale behind the suspension, Om Birla underscored that it was solely intended to preserve the sanctity of the House. The suspension affected a total of 13 opposition MPs, including nine from the Congress, who were barred from participating in Lok Sabha proceedings for the remainder of the ongoing session due to their disruptive behavior following the security breach on December 13.
Reflecting on the commitment made during the inauguration of the new Parliament building, Birla reminded MPs of their collective resolution to refrain from bringing placards into the House and avoiding disturbances in the well of the House. He stressed the awareness among members that the public disapproves of inappropriate conduct and interruptions during parliamentary proceedings. Birla asserted that the unanimous decision was to establish the highest standards of parliamentary decorum and dignity, citing this as the reason for the strict action of suspending members.
Furthermore, Om Birla informed MPs about the measures taken following the significant security breach. He disclosed the formation of a high-level inquiry committee tasked with investigating the incident. The committee has already commenced its work, and its findings will be shared with the House in due course. Additionally, Birla revealed the establishment of a high-powered committee entrusted with reviewing various aspects of security in the Parliament complex. The committee's mandate is to formulate a comprehensive plan to prevent the recurrence of such incidents in the future. This multifaceted approach underscores the commitment to addressing both the immediate consequences of disruptive behavior and implementing long-term security enhancements in the parliamentary setting.
