On Sunday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an Orange alert, signaling the likelihood of heavy to very heavy rainfall, spanning two days on Sunday (December 17) and Monday (December 18), for the southern districts of Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
The IMD's forecast anticipates isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall in the southern regions of Tamil Nadu, impacting districts such as Thoothukudi, Ramanathapuram, Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari, and Tenkasi. Already, the southern districts of Tamil Nadu, including Tirunelveli and Tenkasi, have encountered severe waterlogging due to substantial rainfall on Sunday.
In response to the prevailing weather conditions, four teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are being dispatched to Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, and Kanyakumari, equipped with rescue apparatus.
Taking proactive measures, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin initiated the disbursement of Rs 6,000 in cash assistance to families affected by the rains and floods induced by cyclone Michaung. This financial relief aims to support residents in Chennai and nearby areas, encompassing the districts of Chengelpet, Kancheepuram, and Tiruvallur, as reported by news agency PTI. Stalin personally distributed cash assistance to female heads of families in Velachery, an area significantly impacted by the adverse weather conditions.
The systematic distribution of tokens, specifying the date and time for cash disbursement at jurisdictional ration shops, commenced a few days ago.
