Amid the ongoing diplomatic discord between India and the Maldives, a recent article from a Chinese daily has taken a critical stance toward India, highlighting strained relations with certain South Asian nations. The publication attributes this strain to what it perceives as India's long-standing "regional boss" mentality. The article suggests that rather than shifting blame to China, India should engage in self-reflection regarding its policies toward neighboring countries and consider abandoning a zero-sum mentality.
Quoting analysts, the Global Times article notes that interpreting Maldives President Muizzu's visit to China as pro-China indicates a lack of confidence among specific Indian politicians. This criticism comes in the context of a diplomatic row sparked by derogatory remarks made by Maldivian politicians, including ministers, regarding Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Lakshadweep.
The situation escalated to the point where three Maldivian ministers were suspended from their positions on January 7. Following this, the Maldivian envoy to India was summoned to the External Affairs Ministry on the next day, with India expressing strong concerns over disparaging social media posts against PM Modi. The incident has also resulted in Indian citizens canceling planned vacations to the Maldives, and the online travel company EaseMyTrip suspending flights to the Maldives as a part of the ongoing tensions.
