"A mob attacked with the intent to cause death": Bengali attack probe agency

In the course of their investigative activities related to the ration distribution scam, officials from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) found themselves in a perilous situation when they were allegedly attacked by a sizable mob while attempting to conduct raids at the residence of Trinamool Congress leader Shahjahan Sheikh in Sandeshkhali, North 24 Parganas district, West Bengal.

On Friday, the ED revealed that its officials, who were on a mission to carry out raids on the Trinamool Congress leader's premises, encountered a hostile situation as a throng of nearly a thousand individuals approached them with what appeared to be the intent to cause harm. The incident unfolded in the Sandeshkhali area, where the ED team was en route to Sheikh's residence to investigate his alleged involvement in the ration distribution scam.

In an official statement, the central probe agency detailed the tumultuous encounter, indicating that the mob not only physically assaulted its officials but also seized their mobile phones, laptops, and cash. The confrontational situation escalated to the point where three officers sustained serious injuries. Faced with a violent and aggressive mob, the remaining officers had to abandon their search operation to protect their lives.

The mob's actions extended beyond physical assault, as they reportedly snatched, robbed, and stole personal and official belongings from the ED officials, including mobile phones, laptops, cash, and wallets. In response to this disturbing incident, the Enforcement Directorate has filed a police complaint, urging appropriate action against those responsible for the attack.

West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose expressed strong disapproval of the incident in Sandeshkhali, emphasizing that the state government holds the primary responsibility for quelling violence within its jurisdiction. Visiting the injured ED officials at a Kolkata hospital, he asserted that Bengal is not a "banana republic" and underscored the government's duty to prevent violence, warning of potential consequences if effective action is not taken.

The ED's ongoing investigations into the alleged ration distribution scam have been unfolding over several months, with the agency asserting that a substantial portion of the Public Distribution System (PDS) ration designated for beneficiaries in West Bengal was diverted to the open market. The raids, conducted based on various FIRs filed by the West Bengal Police, aimed to uncover unauthorized possession of PDS ration and expose individuals engaged in fraudulent procurement of paddy.
