Amid indignation, Bihar Police makes the first arrest in the gangrape and murder of Dalit girls

The Bihar Police made an arrest on Friday in connection with the reported rape of two girls from the Mahadalit community in Patna, where one of them was discovered dead. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Rajiv Mishra confirmed the arrest, revealing that the accused had confessed to the crime during the interrogation. However, detailed information about the apprehended individual has not been disclosed.

The distressing incident involved two Mahadalit minor girls allegedly being kidnapped and raped in the Hinduni Badhar area of Patna on Monday. Unfortunately, one of the victims succumbed to severe injuries from the ordeal, while the other is currently undergoing treatment at AIIMS in Patna.

According to the families, both girls had gone together to collect cow dung cakes on Monday but failed to return home. The body of one of the minors was discovered by locals on Tuesday, prompting them to inform the police.

In response to the incident, CPI(ML) Liberation MLA Mehboob Alam, along with other party members, marched to the Patna district magistrate's office to express dissatisfaction with the police's handling of the gang rape case. Alam criticized the suspension of a sub-inspector for negligence and emphasized the need for accountability at higher levels.

CPI(ML) Liberation leader Gopal Ravidas also accused the police of inaction, alleging that officials turned away the victims' kin when they sought help on the day the girls went missing. Meanwhile, BJP's National General Secretary of the OBC Morcha, Nikhil Anand, condemned the police's response, specifically criticizing the SSP of Patna for purportedly failing in his duties.
