Dalbir Singh, a Punjab Armed Police (PAP) deputy superintendent and recipient of the Arjuna Award was discovered deceased in Jalandhar under mysterious circumstances, as reported by the police on Monday.
The body of the 54-year-old officer displayed signs of injuries and was found lying on a road in Basti Bawa Khel in Jalandhar, where he was stationed. Notably, one of his legs was observed to be crushed, prompting an ongoing investigation, as confirmed by Jalandhar Police Commissioner Swapan Sharma in a statement to PTI.
The location where Singh's body was found leads to his village in Kapurthala, situated approximately 8 kilometers away from the incident spot, as noted by the commissioner.
Singh's family has filed a complaint in connection with the matter, further adding complexity to the ongoing investigation. Authorities are taking into consideration a previous altercation involving the deputy superintendent, who had engaged in a dispute with residents of another locality in Jalandhar the previous month. Despite the conflict, no formal case had been registered at the time, as the involved parties had managed to reach a compromise.
It is worth mentioning that Dalbir Singh, previously a weightlifter of acclaim, was honored with the prestigious Arjuna Award in 2000. The circumstances surrounding his demise have raised questions, necessitating a thorough examination by law enforcement to ascertain the events leading to his tragic end.
