After more than two years since a tragic car accident in Brampton claimed the life of a young woman, a 27-year-old individual of Indian descent has finally stepped forward to confront the legal consequences.
Harkamalpreet Singh, aged 27, surrendered himself to authorities in Kenora, Ontario, on January 9, in connection to the fatal collision that occurred in November 2021.
The unfortunate incident transpired on the morning of November 5, 2021, in the vicinity of Sandalwood Parkway and Dixie Road. Singh, allegedly operating a black vehicle recklessly, caught the attention of an Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer, who attempted to initiate a traffic stop.
However, Singh opted to flee the scene, prompting a brief pursuit that was eventually terminated, as per reports from Toronto CTV News. Shortly thereafter, Singh's vehicle collided with a red car, resulting in the tragic death of a 21-year-old woman identified as Shellome Peart, who was the driver of the red car.
Another occupant, a 25-year-old individual, sustained critical injuries and was hospitalized as a result of the collision.
Following his prolonged evasion of authorities, Singh finally turned himself into law enforcement. He now faces multiple charges related to the accident, including dangerous operation causing death, evading law enforcement, and failure to remain at the scene of an accident resulting in death, as detailed in a report by CP24.
Additionally, an inquiry has been initiated to scrutinize the actions of the officer who initiated the pursuit. However, after an investigation by the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), it was determined that the officer's conduct did not contribute to the collision, and thus, no criminal charges were deemed appropriate.
