Man of Indian descent accused of assaulting a Singaporean police officer while being arrested

A 49-year-old individual of Indian descent, identified as Haridas Ryan Peter, is facing charges related to assaulting a public servant, specifically a 22-year-old special constable sergeant from Singapore. This incident occurred when Peter allegedly barricaded himself with his girlfriend in an apartment and kicked a police officer during the arrest process. The altercation took place at a car park located in Sembawang Drive on January 23.

Initially, authorities were alerted to a case of assault transpiring within an apartment in the same vicinity, involving Peter and his 52-year-old girlfriend. Upon receiving the report, officers from various units, including the Crisis Negotiation Unit (CNU), Special Operations Command, and the Singapore Civil Defence Force, swiftly responded to the scene. Given the potential threat posed by Peter to himself and others, law enforcement agencies mobilized to address the situation.

According to police reports, after extensive negotiation efforts by CNU officers, a decision was made to breach the unit where Peter was located. This action was taken when officers observed that Peter's girlfriend had momentarily left the area to use the restroom, providing them with an opportunity to ensure her safety. While specific details of the breach were not disclosed, authorities successfully gained entry to the apartment.

During the subsequent arrest, Peter allegedly kicked the police officer, resulting in an assault charge against him. If found guilty, Peter could face a maximum penalty of seven years' imprisonment, a fine, or corporal punishment.

The case against Peter has been adjourned until February 8, pending further legal proceedings.
