Basavanna, the Lingayat seer, is named the state's "cultural leader" by Karnataka

The Karnataka government, in anticipation of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, officially declared Basavanna, the 12th-century Lingayat philosopher, as the cultural leader of the state. This decision comes following persistent appeals from prominent Lingayat seers and leaders in North Karnataka urging the government to accord cultural leadership status to the revered philosopher.

Highlighting Basavanna's profound influence and leadership in Karnataka, Law Minister HK Patil emphasized the historical significance of Basavanna's contributions, particularly in establishing the Anubhava Mantapa center during the 12th century. Patil stated, "Karnataka is known for the great leadership by Basavanna. The 12th-century Anubhava Mantapa center came into existence because of Basavanna. And hence, we have decided to name him as the cultural leader of the state."

Responding to speculations that this move might be a strategic maneuver ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, Minister Eshwar Khandre dismissed such notions, asserting that Basavanna's philosophy encapsulates the essence of various great leaders, and this declaration is not influenced by election-related considerations.

In a related proposal, Minister MB Patil had previously suggested renaming Vijayapura after Basavanna, emphasizing the enduring legacy and impact of the philosopher, who hailed from North Karnataka and was renowned for his social reforms. Basavanna played a pivotal role in establishing the Anubhava Mantapa in Basavakanyan, located in Bidar district, as a platform where individuals from diverse socio-economic backgrounds could convene to engage in discussions on various issues.
