"Cancelled": 'Boycott Maldives' trends as a result of outrage against posts made by Maldivian leaders about PM Modi

The emergence of the hashtag #BoycottMaldives on various social media platforms gained momentum due to the inflammatory comments made by Maldivian politicians, Zahid Rameez and Minister Mariyam Shiuna, directed at Prime Minister Narendra Modi. These derogatory remarks, which included racial undertones and mockery of PM Modi for promoting Lakshadweep as a tourist destination, have sparked widespread condemnation, leading to a surge in the online campaign.

As the hashtag #BoycottMaldives began trending, numerous Indians, including celebrities, expressed their disapproval, claiming to have canceled their planned trips to the island nation. In response to the anti-India sentiments voiced by Maldivian leaders, social media users shared captivating images of the picturesque Lakshadweep islands, and celebrities actively advocated for Indian tourism.

Bollywood actor John Abraham utilized a platform to endorse the beauty of Lakshadweep, highlighting the incredible Indian hospitality, the concept of "Atithi Devo Bhava," and the abundant marine life available for exploration on the islands. Similarly, actor Akshay Kumar called upon fellow citizens to support the nation's tourism, expressing surprise at the derogatory comments from prominent figures in the Maldives.

The impact of the controversy reached prospective travelers, as evident in a user's decision to cancel a birthday trip to the Maldives after coming across the deputy minister's tweet. The sentiment of boycotting Maldives gained traction as citizens expressed their disappointment and chose to explore alternative destinations within India.

Rameez, a member of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), took to social media to criticize India, accusing the country of imitating a smaller economy like Sri Lanka for financial gain. This comment further fueled the online discourse, with comparisons arising between Lakshadweep and the Maldives, known for its scenic beaches. Lakshadweep, in turn, became the most searched tourist destination in response to the heightened attention.

Rameez continued to make controversial remarks, asserting that PM Modi's visit to Lakshadweep would negatively impact the Maldives and boost tourism in Lakshadweep. Despite the backlash, he retweeted a post defending his stance and asserting the independence of the Maldivian government.

Minister Mariyam Shiuna also contributed to the controversy with derogatory remarks against PM Modi, referring to him as a "clown" and "puppet." These comments were later deleted after facing backlash on social media. Former Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed condemned the language used by Minister Shiuna, emphasizing the importance of India as a key ally for the security and prosperity of the island nation.
