The mandate issued by the Uttar Pradesh government stipulates the compulsory installation of CCTV cameras in all school vehicles within the state, with the primary objective of ensuring the safety of children during their transportation. This directive, conveyed through an official circular released by the state government on December 29, was articulated by L Venkateshwarlu, the principal secretary of the transport department.
According to the notification, the enforcement of this requirement will commence three months after the publication date in the Gazette. Although certain school vans had already adhered to the surveillance camera installation stipulations outlined in the Uttar Pradesh Motor Vehicle rules, the recent circular imposes specific deadlines for all school vans to comply with the mandatory camera installation.
It is noteworthy that the upcoming centralized Vehicle Location Tracking Center holds significance in this context. Once operational, this center will oversee the installation of such cameras in all public transport vehicles, augmenting the monitoring mechanisms for enhanced safety. The transport department has taken proactive steps by engaging a private agency for the implementation of the Vehicle Location Tracking System (VLTS) across the state.
Empowered with the authority to deploy, integrate, test, and operationalize the vehicle tracking platform, the appointed agency plays a pivotal role in the successful execution of the VLTS. The overarching objective of this comprehensive project is to interconnect all public transport vehicles, excluding two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and e-rickshaws, with advanced vehicle location tracking devices. Real-time monitoring of the location of these vehicles will be facilitated through an integrated control and command center, ensuring a robust and efficient tracking system for the entire public transport network in Uttar Pradesh.
