On Wednesday, the former Prime Minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan, found himself facing charges of contempt filed by the electoral commission, as revealed by his lawyer Naeem Haider Panjutha on the social media platform X.
The 71-year-old ex-cricket star has been entangled in a web of political and legal confrontations since his removal from the position of prime minister in April 2022. Notably, Khan has been absent from public view since August, following a three-year jail sentence for the alleged unlawful sale of state gifts during his tenure from 2018 to 2022.
Panjutha expressed discontent, stating, "The Election Commission indicted Imran Khan in the absence of lawyers." The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) initiated contempt proceedings against Khan and other former leaders affiliated with his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party.
Despite being widely regarded as the country's most popular leader, Khan vehemently denies all charges, asserting that he is a target of persecution orchestrated by the influential military to prevent his participation in future elections. The military, however, denies any such involvement.
In a recent development, a high court declined to suspend Khan's disqualification from participating in upcoming elections, further complicating the political landscape for the former prime minister.
