UK releases tight visa guidelines for international students: Family members are not permitted

The UK Home Office has introduced new restrictions on foreign students, limiting their ability to bring family members with them, with exceptions only for postgraduate research courses and government-funded scholarships. This move is part of an overall tightening of visa rules for international students, including those from India, enrolling at British universities. These regulations, announced by former Home Secretary Suella Braverman in May of the previous year, are aimed at curbing the misuse of student visas as a means to enter the UK for work purposes, resulting in an anticipated reduction of 140,000 individuals coming to the UK.

The restrictions, effective from this month, were highlighted by British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in a social media post, emphasizing the government's commitment to delivering on its promises to the British public. The changes specifically target the perceived "unreasonable practice" of overseas students bringing dependents, a phenomenon that has seen a surge of over 930 percent since 2019, according to official figures.

The Home Office stressed that these modifications to student visas strike a delicate balance, aiming to preserve the appeal of the UK's prestigious higher education sector while preventing institutions from compromising the country's reputation by using immigration as a selling point rather than focusing on education.

The government plans to collaborate with universities to devise an alternative approach, ensuring that the brightest and most talented individuals can still bring dependents to the UK's leading universities. This initiative aligns with the broader commitment of the UK government, led by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, to reduce both legal and illegal migration into the country.
