China 'firmly opposes' outside meddling in the island country of the Maldives over the dispute between India and Iran

On Thursday, China expressed its strong opposition to external interference in the internal affairs of the Maldives, asserting its support for the island nation's sovereignty and independence. The joint statement issued after Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu's visit emphasized the commitment to supporting each other in safeguarding core interests.

The statement emphasized China's firm support for the Maldives in upholding national sovereignty, independence, and dignity, respecting its exploration of a development path suitable for national conditions, and opposing external interference. This declaration coincides with a diplomatic dispute between the Maldives, led by President Muizzu, considered pro-Beijing, and India over derogatory remarks made by three Maldivian ministers against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, resulting in the cancellation of Indian tourist reservations.

The Maldives, in the joint statement, affirmed its firm commitment to the one-China principle, recognizing the People's Republic of China as the sole legal government representing the entire country and considering Taiwan an inalienable part of China's territory. Additionally, the Maldives opposed any action undermining China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, rejected "Taiwan independence" activities, and pledged not to establish official relations with Taiwan.

The statement emphasized the Maldives' opposition to external interference in China's internal affairs, supporting China's efforts for national reunification. The countries signed 20 agreements during Muizzu's visit, covering various areas such as tourism, Belt and Road cooperation, economic and technical cooperation, blue economy, digital economy, green development, infrastructure, and livelihood assistance.

Muizzu's visit to China occurred amid a diplomatic row with India and the release of a report by the EU Election Observation Mission of Maldives, alleging anti-India sentiments and disinformation spread by the ruling coalition during the 2023 presidential elections, in which Muizzu emerged victorious.
