Oil tanker implicated in US-Iran dispute in the Gulf of Oman is seized by Iran

On Thursday, Iran took control of the St Nikolas, a tanker carrying Iraqi crude oil en route to Turkey, in what seems to be a retaliatory move against the United States' seizure of the same vessel last year. The Marshall Islands-flagged tanker, previously named Suez Rajan, had been confiscated by the U.S. in 2023 for transporting Iranian oil. The vessel was boarded by armed individuals near the Omani city of Sohar, according to the British maritime security firm Ambrey. The ship's AIS tracking system was turned off as it headed towards the Iranian port of Bandar-e-Jask.

Iran had previously issued warnings to the U.S. about the consequences of the seizure, and now, it appears to have acted on those threats. The Iranian Army, through state media, announced the seizure of an "American oil tanker" in the Gulf of Oman with a judicial order. It's worth noting that the vessel is described as American in Iranian media, even though it is Marshall Islands-flagged.

The St Nikolas, which was carrying 145,000 metric tonnes of oil loaded in the Iraqi port of Basra, was destined for Aliaga in western Turkey via the Suez Canal. The vessel's operator, Empire Navigation, reported losing contact with the ship after the incident.

This latest event follows the 2023 seizure by the U.S., where the St Nikolas was accused of attempting to send contraband Iranian oil to China, violating U.S. sanctions. The ship, carrying more than 980,000 barrels of Iranian crude, faced difficulties unloading its cargo due to fears of secondary sanctions on vessels involved in the process.

The recent incident raises geopolitical tensions, particularly in the strategically crucial region of the Strait of Hormuz. The vessel's crew, consisting of 18 Filipino nationals and one Greek national, is currently in Iranian custody. Both the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) and Iranian authorities have reported on the situation. However, as of now, the United States Navy's Fifth Fleet has not provided comments or additional information regarding the incident. The circumstances surrounding the seizure and the geopolitical implications are likely to be subjects of ongoing investigation and diplomatic discussions.
