Days after the Poonch incident, Amit Shah convenes a high-level security meeting in Jammu and Kashmir

A significant security review meeting concerning the state of Jammu and Kashmir was convened on Tuesday, presided over by Union Home Minister Amit Shah. This gathering occurred several weeks after a terror attack on an Army vehicle in the Poonch district, resulting in the tragic demise of four jawans. The discussions during the meeting, aimed at enhancing security measures, particularly focused on fostering better coordination among the police, Army, and CRPF, as per sources disclosed to India Today TV.

The meeting, under the leadership of Home Minister Amit Shah, delved into strategies to reinforce local intelligence, and to fortify the security apparatus in the region. The array of attendees included Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla, Army Chief General Manoj Pandey, Intelligence Bureau Chief Tapan Deka, RAW chief, Director General of National Investigation Agency, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo, Director General of Police RR Swain, and various other senior officials.

Against the backdrop of heightened security concerns stemming from two terror attacks in Jammu and Kashmir, notably in Kokernag and the Poonch-Rajouri sector, during the latter part of 2023, the meeting addressed the urgent need for strategic responses. The incident on December 22, 2023, witnessed four soldiers losing their lives and two sustaining injuries when heavily armed terrorists ambushed two Army vehicles in the Rajouri-Poonch sector. Furthermore, in September 2023, an Army Colonel, a Major rank officer, and a Deputy Superintendent of Police met their demise in a gunfight with terrorists in the Kokernag area of the Anantnag district.

A distressing revelation emerged from sources, indicating that over the past two years, a total of eight terrorist attacks in Jammu and Kashmir resulted in the tragic loss of at least 34 security force personnel. The gravity of these incidents underscored the imperative nature of the security review meeting, where comprehensive discussions aimed at mitigating such threats were integral to the agenda.
