The originally planned visit of Union Home Minister Amit Shah to Jammu and Kashmir, during which he was scheduled to inaugurate significant projects and review the security and development of the Union territory following recent terror attacks, has been postponed due to adverse weather conditions in the region.
The Home Minister's intended activities included attending the Viksit Bharat Sankalp Yatra in Jammu, inaugurating projects amounting to Rs 1,379 crore, including the introduction of e-buses in Jammu city, and laying the foundation stone for projects worth Rs 2,348 crore. Furthermore, his itinerary involved a visit to Dera Ki Gali in the Poonch sector, where he was slated to meet the families of civilians who lost their lives in the area. Notably, three civilians were found dead near the site of a terrorist ambush in the Poonch district on December 23, 2023, prompting allegations of "custodial murders inside an army camp of 48 RR" from the families of the deceased.
In response to the incident, the Jammu and Kashmir administration announced compensation and job opportunities for the affected families. This tragic event occurred a day after terrorists ambushed and killed four soldiers, while three others sustained injuries in the Poonch district.
In the aftermath of these developments, on January 2, Amit Shah conducted a security review meeting in New Delhi focusing on Jammu and Kashmir. Discussions during the meeting centered around enhancing coordination among the police, the Army, and CRPF to bolster security measures in the region. Despite the initial plans for the Home Minister's visit to address critical issues, the visit had to be rescheduled due to the challenging weather conditions in Jammu, underscoring the importance of flexibility in responding to unforeseen circumstances.
