Punjab Police initiates a nationwide campaign of dismantling drug dealers and traffickers

On Monday, the Punjab Police initiated an extensive crackdown against drug smugglers and peddlers in the state, unveiling the 'Operation Eagle.' This initiative encompassed a series of searches conducted across all 25 districts of the border state, including areas like Pathankot and Gurdaspur, to identify potential hideouts of anti-social elements involved in illicit activities.

Special Director General of Police (DGP) Arpit Shukla informed India Today about the concerted efforts taken by the Punjab Police in launching this intensive operation against those engaged in drug peddling and smuggling. The initiative involved a meticulous cordon-off and search operation, coordinated by three police commissioners and 25 district police chiefs. Shukla emphasized that sensitive areas notorious for drug-related activities were cordoned off to facilitate the apprehension of suspects.

Supervised by district police chiefs and commissioners, with additional support from senior police officials dispatched from Chandigarh, the operation targeted the identification and crackdown on areas prone to drug-related offenses. Pathankot's Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police SK Rampal reported successful outcomes, detailing eight recoveries under the Exercise Act and five under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985.

Rampal highlighted the establishment of special barricades at interstate barriers to monitor the movement of anti-social elements. Additionally, two proclaimed offenders were apprehended during the operation, contributing to its overall effectiveness.

The operation's scope extended beyond the anti-drug efforts, as it was presented as part of the security preparations leading up to the Republic Day event. 'Operation Eagle,' currently underway, seeks to instill confidence among the general populace, promoting a sense of security and well-being.

Gurdaspur's Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Naresh Arora shared insights into the extensive search operation conducted in the district, in line with the directives from Punjab's Director General of Police. Arora explained that the cordon and search operation covered various locations in the district, targeting identified drug hotspots. Raids were conducted at houses linked to drug peddlers and smugglers, with a specific focus on Gurdaspur's Islamabad Mohalla, known for its association with drug smuggling.

Arora revealed that during these searches, 20 grams of heroin were recovered, and illegal liquor storage was detected. Legal actions were being taken against those involved in illicit activities, and comprehensive information would be provided upon the completion of the search operation. The multifaceted approach of 'Operation Eagle' underscores the commitment of the Punjab Police to address the complex challenges posed by drug-related offenses and illicit activities.
