India's bloc leader, Mallikarjun Kharge, is named, but Nitish declines the convener post: References

According to sources divulging information to India Today, Mallikarjun Kharge has emerged as the proposed candidate for the position of chairperson of the Opposition INDIA bloc, a significant development that precedes the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections. Following a sequence of meetings and extensive deliberations, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge was reportedly designated as the chairperson of the Opposition-led INDIA bloc on Saturday. However, it is worth noting that an official announcement confirming this development is still pending.

This notable development transpired as leaders affiliated with the INDIA bloc convened a virtual meeting to scrutinize various facets, including the seat-sharing agenda, active participation in the "Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra," and other matters about the alliance, earlier today.

Simultaneously, during the meeting, it was communicated that Nitish Kumar would assume the role of the bloc's convener. Despite this decision, Nitish Kumar's party has conveyed that he is not actively seeking any position, and reports suggest that the Chief Minister of Bihar has rejected the proposal, suggesting that someone from the Congress should shoulder the responsibility.

The final determination regarding the convener post is anticipated after discussions with key figures such as West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, and other leaders who were not physically present at the meeting.

Notably, in December of the previous year, Mamata Banerjee endorsed Kharge as the Prime Ministerial candidate for the alliance, a proposal that received support from Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

On a different note, Mallikarjun Kharge chaired a meeting on Friday, bringing together the Lok Sabha coordinators from several states. In this session, he urged them to enhance their engagement with the public. The first meeting encompassed states like Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Delhi, Goa, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, and Daman and Diu, while the second meeting was dedicated to coordinators from Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Chandigarh, Jammu-Kashmir, and Ladakh.

It's noteworthy that Kharge had previously engaged in discussions with Lok Sabha coordinators from various states on Thursday. In an organizational effort, the party has appointed coordinators for all Lok Sabha constituencies, aiming to streamline and synchronize efforts across the country in anticipation of the upcoming elections.
