Mahua Moitra, the former Trinamool Congress (TMC) Lok Sabha MP who was expelled from the Parliament on December 8 last year, received a second notice from the Directorate of Estates (DoE) on Thursday. This notice follows her failure to respond to the initial notice by the January 11 deadline, and it requires her to provide an explanation as to why an extension should be granted for her to vacate the government bungalow.
The DoE's latest communication instructs the TMC leader to present herself before the agency by January 16, elucidating the reasons justifying an extension for her continued occupancy of the government-provided residence. Moitra was initially directed to vacate the premises by January 7 following the cancellation of her allotment after expulsion from Lok Sabha.
Subsequently, Moitra sought legal recourse by approaching the Delhi High Court. However, on January 4, the court advised the TMC leader to approach the DoE with a request for permission to retain the government accommodation allotted to her.
It is noteworthy that Moitra faced disciplinary action on December 8, 2023, being found guilty of "unethical conduct" for allegedly accepting gifts from businessman Darshan Hiranandani and sharing her user ID and password for the Parliament website with him, leading to her expulsion from Lok Sabha.
