Meet Preeti Rajak, the Indian Army's first female subedar


In a moment of immense pride for both the Indian Army and women across the nation, Havildar Preeti Rajak, an accomplished trap shooter, received a well-deserved promotion to the esteemed rank of Subedar on Saturday. Subedar Preeti Rajak's elevation marks a significant milestone as she becomes the first woman to hold the position of Subedar in the Indian Army, standing as a beacon of women's resilience and competence.

Subedar Preeti Rajak embarked on her journey with the Indian Army, joining the Corps of Military Police on December 22, 2022, based on her exceptional performance in trap shooting. Notably, Preeti Rajak stands out as the pioneering sportswoman in the shooting domain to secure enlistment in the Indian Army as a Havildar, a testament to her remarkable talent and dedication.

Adding to her accolades, Subedar Preeti Rajak made waves during the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, held from September 21 to October 1, 2023. There, she clinched a silver medal in the Trap Women Team Event, showcasing her mettle on the global platform. Her outstanding display on the international stage captured the attention of military authorities, resulting in her being granted a commendable out-of-turn promotion to the esteemed rank of Subedar.

Presently ranked 6th in India in the Trap Women Event, Subedar Preeti Rajak is immersed in rigorous training at the prestigious Army Marksmanship Unit (AMU) as she gears up for the Paris Olympic Games scheduled for 2024.

"The remarkable achievement of Subedar Preeti Rajak is poised to inspire future generations of young women to follow suit, both in joining the Indian Army and in excelling in the field of professional shooting," the Army asserted in a statement, underscoring the transformative impact of her success.
