Ten Indian fisherman are detained by Sri Lanka for poaching in its waters

Instances of Indian fishermen facing apprehension by the Sri Lankan Navy for allegedly engaging in fishing activities within Sri Lankan waters have been recurrent. In the most recent occurrence, the Sri Lankan Navy disclosed the arrest of 10 Indian fishermen and the confiscation of their trawler, citing allegations of poaching in Sri Lanka's waters.

This official statement, issued on Monday, highlighted that the incident transpired on Sunday near the northern region of Point Pedro in Jaffna. The Sri Lanka Navy further specified that the apprehended fishermen were transported to Kakesanthurai harbor and are slated to be handed over to the Mailadi Fisheries Inspector for subsequent legal actions.

This development unfolded in the wake of another incident a day prior, where 12 Indian fishermen faced arrest off the coast of Karainagar in the northern Jaffna peninsula on charges of poaching.

The pattern of Indian fishermen being detained by the Sri Lankan Navy persists, primarily attributed to allegations of crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line and engaging in fishing activities within Sri Lankan waters.

This ongoing issue has resulted in confrontations, as evidenced by instances in the previous year when Sri Lankan Navy personnel resorted to opening fire on Indian fishermen in the Palk Strait, seizing their boats. The Palk Strait, a narrow waterway demarcating Tamil Nadu from Sri Lanka, stands as a fertile fishing ground for both nations.

Reflecting on the gravity of the situation, statistics from the year 2023 underscore the magnitude of the issue, with a total of 240 Indian fishermen being arrested, and 35 trawlers being seized by the Sri Lankan Navy on allegations of poaching. This recurring friction underscores the complexity of maritime boundaries and the challenges faced by both countries in maintaining a harmonious and regulated fishing environment.
