In the West Midlands County of the United Kingdom, two individuals, one of Indian origin, have been sentenced to imprisonment for causing the death of an 81-year-old Sikh woman, Surinder Kaur, who was fatally struck by a vehicle while returning home from a Gurdwara, as reported by the media.
The tragic incident occurred on November 13, 2022, on Oldbury Road in Rowley Regis. Arjun Dosanjh, aged 26, and Jacek Wiatrowski, aged 51, who were not acquainted, engaged in a high-speed race after stopping at traffic lights next to each other. The vehicles, a BMW driven by Wiatrowski and a Mini driven by Dosanjh, were found to be significantly exceeding the speed limit.
CCTV footage revealed that Wiatrowski applied brakes upon noticing Kaur crossing the road, narrowly avoiding a collision with her. However, this action led Dosanjh to swerve onto the wrong side of the road, avoiding the BMW but tragically colliding with Kaur.
"Weiatrowski and Dosanjh did not know each other and were driving competitively - this dangerous and foolish action has cost a life," remarked Detective Sergeant Chris Ridge from West Midlands Police.
Both defendants pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving. During the sentencing at Wolverhampton Crown Court, Wiatrowski and Dosanjh received a six-year prison term and an eight-year driving ban, as reported by the BBC.
In a victim statement read in court and released by the police, Kaur's family expressed the profound impact of her loss, describing her as a deeply religious woman who led a simple life. The family shared the emotional toll of grappling with the aftermath of her death and the ongoing police investigation, emphasizing the lasting anguish caused by the tragic event.
