In Hubballi, Karnataka, the police have apprehended a 50-year-old individual, identified as Poojary, for his involvement in the riots that ensued following the demolition of the Babri Masjid in 1992. At the time of the riots, Poojary was 20 years old. This arrest comes after a prolonged period, as the police had categorized Poojary's case as "long-pending."
According to Renuka Sukumar, the Police Commissioner of Hubballi-Dharwad, this arrest is part of a routine initiative by law enforcement to address long-standing cases. The case against Poojary had been classified as such since 2006. Over the past three months, the police have successfully resolved 37 cases with similar long-pending statuses. Subsequently, Poojary has been placed in judicial custody. The charges against him relate to his involvement in the riots that transpired in Hubballi following the Babri demolition in Ayodhya.
The Babri Masjid, a 16th-century mosque located in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh, was demolished on December 6, 1992, by right-wing Hindu activists. The site holds significance as it is believed to be the birthplace of Lord Ram, a revered deity in Hinduism. The aftermath of the Babri Masjid's demolition witnessed prolonged legal disputes regarding the ownership of the disputed site. Ultimately, in November 2019, the Supreme Court issued a verdict allotting the land for the construction of a Ram temple, alongside providing an alternate plot for the construction of a mosque.
The upcoming inauguration of the Ram Mandir on January 22 is a notable development in this context. The temple's construction signifies the resolution of a longstanding dispute over the site and the realization of a significant religious structure.
