On Wednesday, Pakistan responded to Iran's airstrike on suspected terrorist hideouts in Balochistan province by recalling its ambassador from Iran and suspending all high-level visits. The Iranian strikes, reported to be "precision missile and drone strikes," targeted alleged strongholds of the Sunni terrorist group Jaish al-Adl (known as Jaish al-Dhulm in Iran), according to now-deleted reports from state-run Iranian media.
India Today's OSINT (Open Source Intelligence) team conducted a geolocation of the strike area inside Pakistan. The strike, as indicated by social media footage and mountainous terrain features, appeared to hit a remote area near Panjgur, as reported by Pakistani news outlet Dawn. The identified coordinates were estimated to be about 60 kilometers from the Panjgur district and approximately 50 kilometers from the nearest Pakistan-Iran border.
By cross-referencing these distances on a satellite map and visually comparing mountain peaks, an approximate range of locations was determined. Further investigation revealed a close match to the target area, where scant settlements were observed, including a mosque.
Media reports, citing Panjgur district's deputy commissioner Mumtaz Khetran, stated that "a mosque near the homes was targeted and hit in the strike." The geolocated region appeared to be a secluded settlement in remote mountainous terrain with fewer than 50 rooftops in a 0.5km radius, based on remote-sensing data analysis. This enclave was situated at a substantial distance from nearby villages like Panjgur, Shabaz Kalat, Sorenkik, and Gichk, all located at least 60 kilometers away.
The geopolitical context adds complexity to the situation, given that Iran's Foreign Minister met Pakistan's caretaker Prime Minister on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos just as the airstrike occurred. The Iranian strikes in Syria and Iraq, targeting alleged terrorists, had already strained relations with those countries.
Despite Iran's justifications that it was targeting terrorists responsible for recent attacks on its territory, both the Iraqi and Pakistani governments rejected these explanations. This incident unfolded amid heightened tensions in the Middle East, particularly with the ongoing conflict between Israel and the Iran-backed Palestinian group Hamas in the Gaza Strip. Iran, part of the informal "Axis of Resistance," has expressed a desire to avoid wider conflict but has faced accusations of supporting attacks on Israel and its allies. The situation remains dynamic and complex, with diplomatic and geopolitical ramifications.
