Women's panel requests comprehensive report on son of DMK leader abusing Dalit woman

The National Commission for Women (NCW) has issued a demand for a comprehensive report within a two-day timeframe regarding the reported mistreatment of an 18-year-old Dalit woman employed as a domestic worker at the residence of Anto Mathivanan, the son of Tamil Nadu DMK MLA I Karunanithi. The woman alleged experiencing physical torture and deprivation of medical care from her employers.

Expressing strong condemnation for the purported harassment and physical abuse endured by the woman, the women's panel has called for swift and immediate action. Additionally, the NCW has requested a copy of the FIR within the stipulated two-day period.

In an official statement, the women's panel urged the concerned police officer to invoke the relevant provisions mentioned in the FIR, ensuring a fair and expeditious investigation. The panel emphasized the importance of promptly apprehending the accused and ensuring that the victim receives free medical treatment.

The NCW has taken a firm stance on ensuring justice for survivors and combating violence against women, affirming its commitment to these principles.

The preliminary observations by the NCW indicate that the alleged crime falls under the purview of the Indian Penal Code, 1860, specifically Sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty).

Following injuries sustained during the incident in Kallakuruchi district, the victim sought medical treatment during the Pongal festival, prompting the hospital to report the case to local police. However, Karunanithi, denying the allegations, claimed that the woman was treated well by his son's family and corrective measures were taken only when necessary.

In a video shared by the non-profit organization Evidence, the Dalit woman asserted that she had completed 12th grade and secured employment as a domestic worker through an agent. Employed for seven months at Anto Mathivanan's residence in Chennai, she alleged facing physical assaults and non-payment of wages.
