Trinamool Congress leader Mahua Moitra completed the process of vacating her government-allotted residence in Delhi on Friday. Moitra, who was removed from her position as a Lok Sabha MP in December of the previous year, had been served an eviction notice by the Directorate of Estates (DoE) on Tuesday.
As per a representative of Mahua Moitra, the entire bungalow was emptied by 10 am on Friday, and the legal possession was officially transferred to the Directorate of Estates through her legal representatives.
Despite seeking relief from the Delhi High Court on Thursday, Moitra was unsuccessful in obtaining a stay against the DoE notice, and the court directed her to promptly vacate the government accommodation.
Justice Girish Kathpalia remarked that no specific regulation had been presented to the court concerning the eviction of MPs from government residences once they cease to hold office.
Moitra faced expulsion from the Lok Sabha following an ethics panel's finding of "unethical conduct." The panel concluded that she had allegedly accepted gifts from businessman Darshan Hiranandani and shared her user ID and password for the Parliament website with him.
The investigation was initiated based on a complaint filed by BJP MP Nishikant Dubey, who accused Moitra of directing questions in the Lok Sabha to target the Adani Group and Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the behest of businessman Darshan Hiranandani in exchange for gifts.
